Godly Play is…
a worship-based, experiential approach to Christian formation for children. The goal of Godly Play is to teach children the art of using religious language to help them become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives. The understanding that permeates this method is that children already know God and are not interested in adults teaching them about God. We simply need to provide them with access to religious language/signs and symbols from the Christian tradition to use when they speak about their original experience of God.
This approach was created and classroom tested for over 50 years by Dr. Jerome Berryman, teacher, author and Episcopal priest and is currently being used in churches of many denominations throughout the US and all over the world.
